Honor The Son

As I was doing my devotions, the following verse of scripture struck me as it has never done before. The verse is found in John 5:23 “That all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him.”

The following verses were spoken by  Jesus as well, as He is being questioned about his identity by the Jewish leaders. They were questioning his working on the sabbath by healing the man at the pool and Jesus’s claim that he was the son of God.

John 5-19 Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son.

What is Jesus actually saying and teaching that is applicable to us today? What does it mean to honor someone?  According to the dictionary, when speaking of people, it is to show respect, to exalt or to give glory to a person or even to yourself. One of the ten commandments teaches or instructs us to honor our father and mother.

Scripture verses about honor.

John 4-44 (Now Jesus himself had pointed out that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)

1 Timothy 1-17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Romans 13-7  Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

Hebrews 13-4 Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.

John12-26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.

1 Peter 2:17-19 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly.

Maybe The Lord’s prayer should be part of our daily prayer life. Personally, I like the traditional wording.

Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name.

Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, As it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation,

But deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen.

There are many more verses about honor in the bible. Take some time to do a search and meditate upon the verses. You will be blessed.

I have to ask myself the question, am I honoring God in my life today because of my faith in Jesus? Am I showing God respect and is he being exalted above all things in my life? Jesus has made it possible for each one of us to have a relationship with The Father. He who honors the Son honors the Father.

Revelation  5:13 And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, “To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”
